How to create a floor plan in four steps
Step 1. Measure. A 5 m tape measure is enough for a residential space. For each room, note the wall lengths, door positions, window positions, and ceiling height.
Step 2. Open the editor. Pick metric or imperial units. The default canvas is a grid-snapping floor that makes accuracy automatic.
Step 3. Draw walls. Use the wall tool to click corners; close the polygon for each room. Walls have editable thickness; the default is appropriate for residential interior partitions.
Step 4. Add doors, windows, and (optionally) labels and furniture. Then snapshot a photo render (PNG) or share a read-only or editable link.
What makes a usable floor plan
A usable floor plan has three things: accurate dimensions, a scale bar, and a north arrow. The home planner shows accurate dimensions on the 2D plan as you draw; for a to-scale export with a scale bar and north arrow, the platform includes DraftCAD, a separate 2D CAD tool.
A presentable floor plan also has: labelled rooms, doors with their swing direction shown, and windows clearly distinguished from walls. The planner ships all of these by default. Labels appear as you name each room, doors render with a swing arc, and windows render with the conventional architectural symbol (parallel lines across the opening).
Creating a floor plan from a sketch
If you only have a hand-drawn sketch (no measurements), start by establishing one known dimension, a wall you can measure or an object of known size (door = ~80 cm). Use that as the reference, then approximate the rest. The 2D grid snapping will keep things proportional.
For real precision, the AI Plan Recognition feature can take an uploaded photo / scan of a hand sketch or existing floor plan and produce an editable 3D model in under a minute (this feature requires bringing your own Anthropic API key; cost is ~$0.005 per scan, paid directly to Anthropic, not to us).
Creating a floor plan from existing photos
If you have photos of every wall and a few overall measurements, you can reconstruct an approximate floor plan in 10-20 minutes. Draw the perimeter first using the longest measurement you have, then triangulate from photo references.
The 3D view in the planner is also useful here. Once you've drawn the walls and added door / window positions from the photos, switch to 3D and verify the result matches your memory of the space.

Will there ever be a paid plan?
It is free today with no paywalled features. Home 3D Plan is community-funded rather than investor-funded, supported by optional partnerships and community contributions. If we ever introduce paid plans, we will show the fees before any charge and will not lock features you already use behind a paywall.
Do I need to create an account?
No. You can open the editor and start designing without signing in. A free account only adds cloud saves across devices, sharing, and a personal texture library; it does not unlock design features.
Is the photo render watermark-free?
Yes. The one-click photo render (a PNG snapshot of the lit 3D scene) has no watermark, no logo overlay, and no resolution cap. For a to-scale PDF, DXF, or SVG, the platform includes DraftCAD, a separate 2D CAD tool.
Can I create a floor plan without measuring?
You can sketch one approximately using grid units as a reference (each grid cell = a known size you set). For real accuracy you do need at least one measured dimension. Or use AI Plan Recognition (an optional feature) to convert an uploaded sketch or photo to an editable plan.
Can I add furniture to the floor plan?
Yes. Furniture is optional and pulls from a built-in catalogue with real-world sizes. Useful for arrangement checks before moving day.
Can I label rooms?
Yes. Each room has an editable name that appears on the 2D plan.
Does it support imperial units?
Yes. Toggle metric / imperial in settings; all dimensions, grids, and exports follow.
