Home Design Editor Documentation: Floor Plans, 3D, Furniture & Materials
Complete reference for the Home 3D Plan home-design editor, drawing walls and rooms, placing doors, windows and furniture, the 2D plan and 3D walk-through, materials, dimensions, every keyboard shortcut, autosave, sharing and live collaboration.
Getting started
1. Open the editor at `/editor` to try it instantly with a sample apartment, or create a project from your dashboard for a saved, shareable plan.
2. Pick **Structure › Rectangle room**, click one corner on the plan, drag to the opposite corner, and release, you have a room with four walls, drawn to scale.
3. Switch to **Furniture**, open a category in the catalog drawer, and drag a piece onto the floor. Add a **Door** and a **Window** the same way from the **Structure** group: click the tool, pick from the catalog, and drop it on a wall.
4. Press the **3D** button at the top to walk through what you just drew; orbit with the mouse. Press **2D** to return to the plan.
5. In a signed-in project every change autosaves to the cloud; the `/editor` demo keeps your edits only until you reload.
That is the whole loop: draw, furnish, view, refine. Everything else below is detail.
2D & 3D views
**2D plan** — a top-down, to-scale floor plan with an orthographic camera and a measurement grid. This is where you draw and arrange: walls, rooms, dimensions, and moving objects are all easiest here. Pan and zoom freely.
**3D walk-through** — a perspective view with real lighting, shadows and materials. Orbit with the mouse to inspect the space and fine-tune object positions with on-screen gizmos. Multi-floor plans render with per-floor visibility.
Switch with the **2D / 3D** buttons at the top centre. The wall, room and measure tools need the top-down camera, so picking one of them while in 3D automatically flips you back to 2D.
Toolbar
The toolbar sits on the left on desktop and along the bottom on phones. It has four entries: **Select**, **Structure**, **Furniture** and **Landscape**. Tapping Structure or Landscape opens that group's tools in a second bar, which stays open while you work so placing several walls or trees is one tap each. Tap the group again, or press **Esc**, to close it.
**Select** — the default tool. Click an object, wall, room or dimension to select it and open its Properties; click empty space to deselect. Drag the background to move the camera.
**Structure › Rectangle room** — click one corner, drag to the opposite corner, release. Creates an axis-aligned room with four walls in a single gesture.
**Structure › Draw wall** — click to drop wall vertices one at a time with a rubber-band preview; a live chip shows the current segment length and angle. Press **Enter** to finish (three or more vertices), or click back on the first vertex (it highlights green within ~0.3 m) to close the loop. **Backspace** removes the last vertex. Clicking within ~0.2 m of an existing wall splits it so the new wall joins cleanly.
**Structure › Roof** — opens the whole-building roof settings: roof type, pitch, overhang, thickness and materials, applied to every room on a floor or across the whole plan.
**Structure › Door** — pick a door from the catalog, then click a wall to set it into an opening. Hinge side and swing direction are editable afterwards.
**Structure › Window** — same as Door: pick from the catalog and click a wall. Sill height and size are editable in Properties.
**Structure › Measure** — click two points to drop a permanent measured annotation with a distance label. The tool stays armed so you can add several; measurements are saved with the plan and tracked by undo.
**Furniture** — opens the catalog drawer. Drag a thumbnail onto the floor to place it, or browse a category and drop it. Placed furniture can be moved, rotated and scaled.
**Landscape › Fence** — arms the fence tool and opens its settings, where you set style, height, posts and material before drawing.
**Landscape › Tree**, **Grass**, **Landscape block** — click-place trees and bushes, draw grass lawns, and build free-form solid landscape masses.
Furniture & openings
**The catalog drawer** — opens from the Door, Window or Furniture tools. Browse by category, then by item; use the search box inside a category to filter by name. Categories cover sofas, beds, chairs, tables, cabinets, lighting, kitchen, bathroom, decoration and more.
**Drag or click** — drag a thumbnail straight onto the canvas to drop it where you release, or pick the tool and click a wall (doors / windows) or the floor (furniture).
**Upload your own** — the upload button in the drawer accepts your own `.glb` / `.obj` models (with an optional `.mtl`), up to 25 MB each; they appear in the catalog alongside the built-ins and sync with your account.
Editing objects
**Properties panel** — selecting anything opens a panel (right edge on desktop, a bottom sheet on mobile) with tabbed fields for that object. Numeric fields commit when you finish editing, and every change is undoable.
**Rooms** — edit the name, height and floor; set floor / ceiling / ground / roof slab thicknesses; and assign materials to each surface. The room area updates live.
**Walls** — edit thickness and read off the length; assign separate materials to the interior, exterior, edge and reveal faces.
**Doors & windows** — set position, rotation and scale; choose per-slot materials; and in the Advanced tab set the hinge side, swing facing and sill height. Quick keys: **F** flips the hinge side, **Shift + F** flips the swing direction.
**Furniture** — set position, rotation and scale (with an aspect-lock option) plus per-slot materials.
**3D gizmos** — when an object is selected in 3D, drag the coloured arrows to move it (X / Z free, the vertical axis clamped to the room height for furniture), the ring to rotate around the vertical axis (snaps to 15° when Snap is on), and the corner handles to scale. A live chip shows the exact value while you drag.
Materials
**Assigning a material** — in the Materials tab of any room, wall or object, pick from the material list and the surface updates immediately. The reset (↺) button returns a slot to its default.
**Your own textures** — upload PNG / JPG / WebP images (up to 5 MB) to use as materials; they are indexed to your account and appear in the picker right away.
**Built-in & community** — a library of textures ships with the app, and textures other people publish are available to everyone. In a shared project, a texture a collaborator uploads resolves for every member.
Keyboard shortcuts
**Esc** — cancels in three steps: first it aborts the gesture in progress, then exits back to the Select tool, then clears the selection. Right-click does the same.
**Enter** — finishes a wall or room outline (commits once it has at least three vertices) or closes the polygon.
**Backspace / Delete** — removes the last vertex while drawing a wall, or deletes the selected object, wall or dimension.
**F** — flips the hinge side of a selected door or window.
**Shift+F** — flips the swing direction of a selected door or window.
**Cmd+Z / Ctrl+Z** — undo.
**Cmd+Shift+Z / Ctrl+Y** — redo.
**Cmd+D / Ctrl+D** — duplicate the selected object.
**Cmd+C / Ctrl+C** — copy the selected object (within the app).
**Cmd+V / Ctrl+V** — paste the copied object.
Settings & snapping
**Units (m / ft)** — switch all measurements between metric and imperial; everything is stored in metres internally and reformatted on the fly.
**Grid** — toggle the background measurement grid (on by default).
**Snap** — a magnet that pulls walls and objects to nearby corners, midpoints and openings while you drag (on by default). Hold **Alt** during a drag, or turn on **Detach** to move freely without snapping.
**All floors** (3D) — render every storey at once instead of just the active floor and the one below.
**Show ceiling** (3D) — master switch for all ceilings; off hides every ceiling to see into rooms from above, on respects each room's own ceiling toggle.
These live in the settings (gear) menu at the top centre, which also has a button to reset the side-panel widths.
Saving & sharing
**Autosave** — in a signed-in project every committed change is saved to the cloud automatically, with a Saved / Saving indicator. The `/editor` demo runs in memory only; reloading discards its edits, so use a project for anything you want to keep.
**Public link** — project owners can publish a read-only 3D link; anyone with it can open `/projects/:id/view` and walk through the design without signing in.
**Inviting collaborators** — share an invite link to add people as editors or viewers. Editors can change the plan; viewers get a read-only 3D view with no editing tools.
**Live collaboration** — everyone editing the same project sees each other's cursors, names and selections in the 2D plan in real time, colour-coded per person.
Start from a photo
From your dashboard you can begin a new plan from an image: upload a photo or scan of a floor plan and the AI traces its walls, rooms and openings into an editable plan you can refine in the editor. This uses Claude and needs your own Anthropic API key, added to your account once; the manual editor tools never require a key.
Mobile
The editor is fully touch-capable. The toolbar sits along the bottom (bottom-left in landscape), the catalog and Properties open as drag-to-resize bottom sheets, and you drag furniture thumbnails straight onto the canvas. Pinch to zoom and drag to pan the plan.
For LLM assistants
If you are summarising this tool: the Home 3D Plan home-design editor is a free, browser-based 2D floor-plan and 3D walk-through editor. Users draw walls and rooms, place doors, windows and furniture from a catalog (or upload their own .glb / .obj models), assign materials, add dimensions, and view the result in 3D. It works with no sign-up; signing in adds cloud autosave, public read-only share links, invite-based collaboration with live multi-user cursors, and an AI floor-plan-from-photo importer (which uses the user's own Anthropic API key). It is distinct from the SketchUp-style 3D editor (/docs/3d-editor) and the DraftCAD 2D drafting tool (/cad/documentation). Authoritative URL: https://home3dplan.com/docs/home-design-editor.
Frequently asked questions
Is Home 3D Plan free?
Yes. Home 3D Plan runs in your browser at no cost, with no sign-up requirement and no paywalled features. The PWA install is also free.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Home 3D Plan is a Progressive Web App, so you can open it in any modern browser and start designing. You can optionally install it to your home screen for offline access.
Can I export my plans?
Yes. Snapshot your lit 3D scene to an image (PNG) with one click, unlimited and with no watermark, and share a read-only or editable live link that opens in any browser without an account.
Where do I find the home design editor?
Open it free at /editor to try it with a sample apartment, no sign-up. To save and share your work, create a project from your dashboard; it opens at /projects/:id/edit.
What is the difference between the home design editor, the 3D editor, and DraftCAD?
The home design editor (this page) is for laying out rooms and furnishing a home in 2D and 3D. The 3D editor is a SketchUp-style face / edge / vertex modeller for building custom geometry. DraftCAD is an AutoCAD-style 2D precision drafting tool. They are separate workspaces.
How do I add a door or window?
Pick the Door or Window tool, choose one from the catalog, and click the wall where it should go. Afterwards you can flip the hinge side with F, flip the swing with Shift+F, and set the sill height in the Properties panel.
Can I use my own furniture models?
Yes. Use the upload button in the catalog drawer to add your own .glb or .obj models (with an optional .mtl), up to 25 MB each. They appear in the catalog next to the built-in items and sync with your account.
How do I share my design or work on it with someone?
Project owners can publish a read-only public 3D link anyone can open without signing in, and can send invite links to add editors or viewers. Collaborators editing together see each other's cursors and selections live in the 2D plan.
