What the 3D editor is, and what it is not
The 3D editor is a SketchUp-style boundary-representation (BREP) modeller. Faces, edges, and vertices are first-class. You select a face, push it inward, and the topology stays clean. It is designed for furniture, fixtures, props, and architectural details, the things that go inside the rooms you draw on the main floor-plan canvas.
It is not a full sub-D sculpting suite like Blender or ZBrush. It is not a parametric CAD package like Fusion 360. It is the modelling tool you actually reach for when you want to build a side table in five minutes, not a turbine blade in five hours.
And uniquely: the editor lives on the same web platform as the rest of Home 3D Plan. Furniture you build in the editor can be saved as a Component, shared with the community, and dropped into a room on the main planner canvas at real scale.
Modelling tools you already know
The interface mirrors DraftCAD: a slim icon rail of essentials on the left and an all-tools ribbon across the top, with tabs that follow SketchUp conventions, **Create** (box, cylinder, cone, sphere, torus, stairs, subdivide), **Draw** (Line, Rectangle, Circle, Polygon, Arc, Pie, Freehand), **Modify** (Push/Pull, Extrude, Move, Rotate, Scale, Offset, Follow Me, Bevel/Fillet, Loop Cut, Eraser), **Solids** (union, subtract, intersect, hollow/shell, reverse faces), **Measure**, and **Paint**. Each tool behaves the way a SketchUp user would expect.
**Push/Pull** is the heart of the workflow. Click a face, drag, and the kernel either translates the vertices (bounded) or rings the face with new geometry (unbounded). **Line** snaps to vertices, edges, and the face plane with pixel-perfect inference. **Move** snaps to other pieces' corners for precise assembly, and a **marquee box-select** plus an on-canvas **Move / Rotate / Scale** gizmo make multi-part edits quick. **Bevel** is an interactive edge chamfer/fillet: drag sets the width, the scroll wheel (or 1-9) sets the segment count (1 = flat chamfer, 6+ = smooth fillet), Shift gives fine 10× adjustment. **Follow Me** sweeps a profile along an edge for cornices, mouldings, and pipe work. Drawing on the ground plane: start from empty
Unlike many web modellers, the 3D editor lets you draw from a truly empty scene. Pick the Rectangle, Circle, Polygon, or Line, tool and click on the bare ground grid. The shape tools create a real face on the XZ plane at Y=0 in two clicks; Line chains a point-by-point outline that closes into a face, exactly like sketching a floor plan in SketchUp. Push/Pull that face upward and you have a solid you can shape further.
Prefer to start from a shape? The **Create** tab drops in ready-made solids, box, cylinder, cone, sphere, torus, even a stairs generator, and the **Solids** tab combines them with CSG booleans (union, subtract, intersect) or hollows one into a walled shell. But there is no "primitive picker first" friction and no required template: open the editor, click, draw, build. Drawing on the ground is the SketchUp way and it stays the default here.
Groups, components, materials, and the Outliner
Group selected faces with **⌘G / Ctrl+G** to turn a loose collection into one unit, so moves, rotates, hides, and locks behave as one. Save the group as a **Component** to reuse it across projects and (optionally) publish it to the community library.
The **Materials** panel ships with a residential palette: oak, walnut, pine, beech, painted finishes, fabric, leather, brass, chrome. Apply a material by arming it and clicking a face, then click more faces to keep going. Custom textures upload to your account and follow you across every project.
The **Outliner** lists every group in the scene. Click the eye to hide a group, the padlock to lock it (so it can not be accidentally moved), or the trash icon to delete. A search box filters when the model gets dense.
AI design partner: Claude inside the 3D editor
Type into the AI Assist panel at the bottom of the screen, such as "create a Scandinavian dining chair", "build a 1.8 m oak bookshelf with five shelves and a cabinet at the bottom", "design a side table with tapered legs and a marble top". The agent uses the same modelling kernel you do, creating primitives, extruding faces, beveling edges, painting materials, grouping pieces into a finished object.
Every step the AI takes is a live mesh edit, streamed to your scene as it runs. Hit **Esc** to cancel mid-task; **Undo** rolls back the entire AI run as one step, or step-by-step if you prefer. You see the AI thinking, tool calls landing on the mesh, and the cost meter ticking up, full transparency, no black box.
The agent has access to a catalogue of ~20 tools (create_box, create_cylinder, extrude_face, chamfer_edges_of_group, paint_group, move_group, rotate_group, scale_group, …), plus a *load_skill* tool that lets it pull in design knowledge on demand, such as Scandinavian-furniture conventions, chair archetypes, dimensioning standards, material palette guidance. Skills mean the agent knows that a dining-chair seat sits 45 cm off the ground and the table sits 75 cm, without having to be told.
Bring-your-own-key: your AI bill, your control
The 3D editor uses *your* Anthropic API key to call Claude. Add it once on your profile (Profile → AI features); it is encrypted on the server with a per-user secret derived from your account ID and only ever decrypted in memory for the duration of a single call. You can remove the key any time, both here and at Anthropic.
Typical cost per AI design session, for a single chair, a small table, a simple bookshelf, is **a few US cents**. Larger objects with many AI steps may run up to ~10-20¢. The cost meter in the panel shows the running total, including how much was served from Anthropic's prompt cache (which we use heavily, so your skill files, system prompt, and conversation history are cached, so successive turns are 10× cheaper than the first).
Home 3D Plan itself is free and will always be free. The AI bill is the one cost we can not zero out, so we put it directly on you, at cost, with no markup, no per-call fee, no usage caps.
Iterative refinement: chat with the model
"Make the back taller." "Lighter wood, try ash." "Add a footrest 30 cm from the floor." "Round the corners." The AI keeps the conversation going. Every follow-up runs against the *current* state of your mesh, with the same tool surface, and you can iterate as many turns as you like.
Selected geometry is part of the context. Select a leg, ask "make these four taper toward the bottom", and the AI scales those specific faces, and it understands what you have highlighted.
Saving, sharing, exporting
Every project auto-saves to your account when you are signed in (anonymous projects live in browser storage). Save a model as a Component to reuse it across projects. Publish a Component to the community library and other users can drop it into their own scenes with one click.
Export to **GLB** for use in any 3D tool, or **OBJ** for triangle-based pipelines. Or save it as a Component and drop it directly into a room on your main Home 3D Plan floor plan, at real-world scale.

No. Every AI run is a single undo step (or undoable step-by-step if you prefer). Press Cmd+Z and the entire AI sequence rolls back. The kernel-level operations the AI calls are the same operations you use manually. There is no privileged path that could corrupt the mesh.

The editor handles meshes with tens of thousands of faces without dropping below 60 fps. PWA install gives you an app icon and offline access; no other "desktop" version is planned.
Can I model architectural details, such as built-ins, banquettes, mouldings?
Yes. Built-in shelving, banquettes, and kitchen islands are well within the editor's scope. Use the Follow Me tool to sweep a profile along an edge for cornices, baseboards, and crown moulding. For full architectural floor plans you would still use the main Home 3D Plan canvas, since the 3D editor is for individual pieces.
Are AI-generated objects always editable?
Yes. Whatever the AI builds is normal half-edge BREP geometry, where every face, edge, and vertex is selectable, draggable, and modifiable with any tool. The AI is just driving the same kernel you do. You can extend a chair leg by 5 cm with the Move tool after the AI finishes; you can chamfer a corner the AI left sharp; you can repaint a face it painted.
