Alternatives
Revit Alternative
One model of the building, drawn in plan and built in 3D: walls, roofs, structure, services and the site, with sections, sheets, quantities and IFC4 out. In a browser tab, on any computer.
Revit: From $2,915 a year. Home 3D Plan (home3dplan.com): Free.
What Revit does, and where it is here
Walls, floors and roofs
Walls drawn in plan give the rooms, slabs and 3D model. Roofs are hipped, gabled, shed or flat, with pitch and overhangs. See the tool
Sections and elevations
Drag a line across the plan for a section. Elevations come from the walls, and a 1:5 detail from a circle on the plan. See the tool
Structural framing
Columns, beams, braces and footings on a lettered grid, exported to IFC as structural elements. See the tool
MEP systems
Circuits, heating and water pipes, drainage at its falls, ducts and solar PV, exported to IFC with their systems. See the tool
Schedules and takeoff
Quantities by storey, element, function and material, written to CSV or a workbook. See the tool
IFC and DWG exchange
DWG and DXF in and out, drawings to PDF and SVG, and the building out as IFC4. See the tool

What Revit does that Home 3D Plan does not
- Opens and saves RVT, the format most large practices and their consultants exchange.
- Families: a deep parametric content system, with large libraries from manufacturers.
- An analytical structural model that links to analysis software.
- Decades of plugins, scripts and trained staff in the market.
Moving from Revit
Export the plans from Revit as DWG and open them here: the lines on the wall layers turn into walls. A PDF of the drawings can sit under the plan as an underlay, set to scale, to trace over.
The editor does not read RVT or IFC files. The other way works: export the model here as IFC4 and Revit opens or links it, with walls, slabs, roofs, openings, structure and services as typed elements.
Which one fits your work
Pick Revit when
- Your consultants and clients exchange RVT files.
- You run large projects with a team trained on Revit.
- You need an analytical structural model linked to analysis software.
Pick Home 3D Plan when
- You design houses and small buildings and want drawings, IFC and quantities from one model.
- You work on a Mac, a Chromebook or an iPad, or on a computer you do not own.
- You want to start in a browser tab, today, and hand IFC to whoever uses Revit.
How to start
Open the editor
Go to home3dplan.com and open the editor. Nothing to install and no account needed to start.
Bring your drawing
Open a DWG or DXF and turn its lines into walls, or trace over a PDF or a scan set to scale.
Build the model
Draw walls and the storeys, rooms, slabs and 3D model follow. Add roofs, structure, services and the site.
Send it out
Print sections, elevations and sheets to PDF or DWG, and send the building out as IFC4.
Revit and Home 3D Plan, answered
Is Home 3D Plan a real alternative to Revit?
For houses and small buildings, yes: one model gives the plans, sections, elevations, sheets, quantities and an IFC4 file with architecture, structure and services. For large projects that exchange RVT files with a team of consultants, Revit is the better fit.
Can I open my Revit files in Home 3D Plan?
Not directly. Export the plans from Revit as DWG or DXF and open those; the wall lines turn into walls. A PDF of the drawings can go under the plan as a scaled underlay.
Does Home 3D Plan run on a Mac?
Yes. It runs in the browser, so it works on a Mac, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS and an iPad. Revit runs on Windows only.
How much does Revit cost compared with Home 3D Plan?
Revit: $2,915 a year per user. AEC Collection $3,375 a year, as published on 10 October 2026. Home 3D Plan is free to use in the browser today.
Does Home 3D Plan export IFC and DWG?
Yes. The building goes out as IFC4, with its architecture, structure and services, and the drawings go out as DWG, DXF, PDF and SVG. DWG and DXF also come in. The editor does not open IFC files.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Home 3D Plan runs in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, ChromeOS, iPad and phones, and can be installed as a web app if you want an icon.
